So you’ve heard the craze about composting and done all the research you can. You might even already have a few options in your online shopping cart! Don’t get swept up in the gardening craze and spend too much money! The truth is that composting has never been so easy!
What you need to know about composting is all pretty simple. The sun works to break down materials naturally. Yes turning your compost can help, and yes worms make it faster! But it’s really easy to start over thinking and never start to compost! Here are the quick and easy steps to start composting at home NOW!
- Start Collecting
Collect the compostable items from your kitchen, after you’re done cutting up those veggies, throw them all into a container instead of into the trash! You’ll also need to collect paper goods. When you get the mail, you’ll want to use all the paper that is soft, nothing that is shiny or plastic. Collect the soft pages and rip them up!
- Find a sunny area
It doesn’t have to be a large area. This spot just has to get full sun! This will be where you will collect the compost, because it will dry out, there is no need to worry about smell! The sun breaks down material so quickly, the composting really happens very fast. This best part is, you don’t actually need to have anything on the ground. You don’t need a fence, or box, no shovel either! This is the most natural, easiest and quickest way to compost.
- Layer
This is the fun part, you simply take a layer of paper, then a layer some kitchen scraps and repeat! Do this up to 7-10 times to start. This pile will shrink down fairly quickly, over a few days. You will have already started to see progress.
- Repeat
No need to turn it, no need to touch it. Just add more! Keeping a fresh layer of dirt on the bottom, your compost will continue to break down into dirt! This dirt will be soft, and airy. The dirt at the bottom of your compost is the best for planting new things! This type of dirt is called “loamy” dirt and best for your garden and the planet!
